About Me
Green Heron Ceramics are made by hand in my home studio - one piece at a time, from a ball of clay to the final firing. Each vessel is wheel-thrown, trimmed, and finished slowly, then glazed with mixes I blend here in the studio. Every piece is fired twice in my small kiln to bring out strength, depth, and the subtle variation that comes from true small-batch work.
My name is Maddie. I’ve been working with clay for 14 years, first learning ceramics in high school and returning to it again and again as a steady, grounding practice. I live in the DC area with my wife and our pup, and I’m grateful to be making and sharing work within this community.
I started Green Heron Ceramics in order to (1) do more art and (2) secure funds for local immigrant mutual aid. By day, I work in federal policy on expanding access to public benefits (Medicaid, SNAP, etc.). Ceramics is my artistic outlet - a place to slow down and pay attention. Clay has been, and continues to be, a meditative practice for me: muscle memory lending itself to perfect symmetry. A study in pushing, pulling, and patience.
Always, my goal is to make ceramics that feel good in your hands - pieces meant to be reached for every day, held often, and kept for a long long time.
